Mobile cellular networks must be synchronized so that towers (base stations) with overlapping coverage do not interfere with each other causing dropped calls or service degradation. 3G and 4G mainly needed frequency synchronization, but 5G cellular technology and 4G LTE-TDD require phase synchronization to make the advanced modulations and techniques work without interference when cells overlap.
